The children's book How to Teach a Slug to Read (by Susan Pearson, illustrations David Slonim, 2011) is brilliant in its rôle-reversal conceit (and the pictures are full of subtle cleverness too!). Addressed to little kids, the suggestions are wise. Slightly abridged:

• Put word-labels on things
• Find really good books, perhaps with rhymes or word-play
• Make sure the new reader has a good view
• Point out words patterns, like repetitions
• Help the new reader sound out words
• Make vocabulary lists
• Let the new reader underline or highlight favorite words
• Read out loud, a lot
• Be patient!
