The children's book How to Teach a Slug to Read (by Susan Pearson, illustrations David Slonim, 2011) is brilliant in its rôle-reversal conceit (and the pictures are full of subtle cleverness too!). Addressed to little kids, the suggestions are wise. Slightly abridged:
- Put word-labels on things
- Find really good books, perhaps with rhymes or word-play
- Make sure the new reader has a good view
- Point out words patterns, like repetitions
- Help the new reader sound out words
- Make vocabulary lists
- Let the new reader underline or highlight favorite words
- Read out loud, a lot
- Be patient!
